Your First Beat in 10 Minutes
The four-on-the-floor starter: where to put the kick, snare and hi-hats on any 16-step drum machine.
The four-on-the-floor starter: where to put the kick, snare and hi-hats on any 16-step drum machine.
Almost every drum machine (Volca Drum, Circuit Tracks, Ableton’s Drum Rack) shows one bar as 16 steps. Number them 1 to 16 and place your hits like this:
| Sound | Steps | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| Kick | 1, 5, 9, 13 | The heartbeat. “Four on the floor.” |
| Snare / clap | 5, 13 | The backbeat your head nods to |
| Closed hi-hat | 3, 7, 11, 15 | The “off-beat” bounce |
Press play. Congratulations, that’s a house beat.
Make three beats with the same kick pattern but different hats and snares. You’ll learn more from three small changes than from one huge beat.
