Ghost in the Shell (1995)
Cyborgs, hackers and rain-soaked neon, years before cyberpunk became a video game genre.
Major Motoko Kusanagi is a cyborg cop hunting a hacker called the Puppet Master, and slowly wondering whether she’s still human. It asks big questions, then answers them with a tank fight.
For gamers
- The Wachowskis showed it to producers to explain what they wanted The Matrix to look like. The digital rain came from here.
- Deus Ex, Cyberpunk 2077 and every hacking minigame with green text owe it something.
- The thermo-optic camouflage is the coolest “go invisible” power-up ever animated.
