Saving Private Ryan (1998)
Twenty-five minutes on Omaha Beach that changed war films and war games forever.
The opening landing is still hard to watch, and that’s the point. After that it turns into a small, human story: eight men risking everything to bring one soldier home.
For gamers
- Medal of Honor (1999) exists because of this film: Spielberg came up with the game after making the film. That series led straight to Call of Duty.
- Allied Assault’s Omaha Beach level is one of the most famous levels ever made, and it’s this film, playable.
- The shaky camera and muffled sound after an explosion became standard tricks in every shooter that followed.
